Project Spotlight
Cabinet Sign
What do you get with 6 months, 30ft of polycarb and 2 bucket trucks?  A lovely new cabinet sign standing tall over Deerfoot Trail! In our newsletter this month, I share our story of rebranding the big Jayman light box sign in SE Calgary.

This was a large project that was several months in the planning. There are some new tenants in the building who wanted to put their name on the big lit sign that overlooks Deerfoot Trail. This sign is 30ft wide and 6ft high – a real behemoth!

This ‘mature’ sign and needed a little TLC. The first step in the project was to complete a site survey. We engaged Dale Erickson over at DLight Signs. To send a crew over with their bucket truck do a thorough assessment of the sign. They measured, took pictures and found where repairs were necessary.
Meanwhile we worked with the tenants, Reion Accounting Professional Corporation, and Altrad Services Ltd, as well as the property manager, Telsec Property Group to define the scope of the project and put a solution together that would fit everyone’s budgets.
We really wanted to make this work for everyone. When you have such a big project where there are multiple parties involved, you can enjoy some ‘economies of scale’ and share the fixed expense across the parties. Makes it a lower cost for everyone.

Next, we started the graphic design phase.  Graphic design is an important process that can be overlooked. When you are investing big bucks in a sign, it’s worth investing time upfront to make sure your design is exactly the way you want it to be.

Emma wisdom on sign design? Two of the most important things you can do is to ensure that you use great contrasting colours that will attract attention and lots of negative space to help focus the eye on your company name and logo.

Once we had the designs, it was time to build the sign panels. There were three panels – one for each tenant and Telsec. These are super large pieces of polycarbonate we were working with. We cleared out our bays to make room so we could cut the panels to the right sizes.

Meanwhile, we printed the graphics out on translucent vinyl and then laminated them for protection and to enhance durability. The polycarb panels are all single pieces but the vinyl that is laid on top is actually in two separate pieces. We can print up to 60” wide on our latex printer and laminate through our laminator. This sign was larger than that at 72 inches, so we needed to produce the vinyl in two pieces.

When everything was ready, we lifted each panel up on to our working table and laid the translucent vinyl. It’s always fun to watch the guys lay the vinyl – it takes at least two of them to work it to make sure everything is lined up properly and we’re bubble free. Normally one or both are up on the table with the polycarb in their sock feet, making sure it all goes according to plan.

And next, we install. This is always a big day. Dale sent two bucket trucks for this job. It took his crew close to half a day to complete the install – not a small feat. I have a tonne of respect for Dale and his team – these guys are out there in what can be nasty weather conditions and they are faced with challenges in every install. Yet they always turn up with a smile and the resourcefulness to figure out a way to ‘MacGyver’ the best solution. And they are damn good at what they do.
And there you have it -- 6 months, 30ft of polycarb and 2 bucket trucks – a beautiful new sign face shining proud over Deerfoot Trail!
